The Removal Centres at Rotterdam Airport and Amsterdam Schiphol Airport are charged with the final preparations prior to the physical removal of removable aliens.
After the arrival of an alien in a Removal Centre his/her file is verified, the compulsory removability check is performed, and a flight is booked. After the flight approval the alien is transferred to Amsterdam Schiphol Airport and deported under the responsibility of the Royal Netherlands Marechaussee.
Zestienhoven Detention Centre normally also houses families with children, Dublin claimants, and a Special Care Unit (EZA) for aliens, in addition to removable aliens in the sense of Article 59 of the Aliens Act. Government flights are also often organized from Zestienhoven Removal Centre, at European level or otherwise.
In addition to removable aliens pursuant to Article 59 of the Aliens Act, the Amsterdam Schiphol Airport Removal Centre houses aliens who depart with aid of IOM, and VRIS aliens. Another category of aliens in Amsterdam Schiphol Airport Removal Centre are aliens pursuant to Article 6 of the Aliens Act. These aliens have been refused entry and are removed by means of a claim.
