The Return Operations Directorate prepares the departure of people that no longer have the right to reside in the Netherlands.

Preferably independently, but forced if necessary

Staff members of the Return Operations Directorate inform people without the right to reside in the Netherlands of their obligation to leave and support them in arranging their departure. Often people can get help to make a new start in their country of origin. For this we collaborate with various organisations. By providing guidance, we make sure people are able leave independently.

When People without the right to reside in the Netherlands are not willing to leave independently, DTenV takes steps to arrange a forced departure. In addition, the Return Operations Directorate prepares the departure of foreign nationals without a residence permit that are detained for a criminal offense.

Pre-departure accommodation

Staff members of the Return Operations Directorate offer people that no longer have the right to reside in the Netherlands personal guidance with making arrangements for their departure. The people concerned often stay in a COA or municipal reception centre. When someone refuses to collaborate on their departure, DTenV can for example transfer the person to an accommodation with a more strict regime.

Such a freedom-restricting measure has the aim of keeping a person available for departure from the Netherlands. For example by transferring them to a freedom-restricting facility or a secure family facility.
